미련한 자에 대한 구절이 많다.

• 미련한 자의 어리석은 것을 따라 대답하지 말라 두렵건대 네가 그와 같을까 하노라

“미련한 사람이 어리석은 말을 할 때에는 대답하지 말아라. 너도 그와 같은 사람이 될까 두렵다. 미련한 사람이 어리석은 말을 할 때에는 같은 말로 대응하여 주어라. 그가 지혜로운 체할까 두렵다. 미련한 사람을 시켜서 소식을 보내는 것은, 제 발목을 자르거나 폭력을 불러들이는 것과 같다. 미련한 사람이 입에 담는 잠언은, 저는 사람의 다리처럼 힘이 없다. 미련한 사람에게 영예를 돌리는 것은, 무릿매에 돌을 올려놓는 것과 같다. 미련한 사람이 입에 담는 잠언은, 술 취한 사람이 손에 쥐고 있는 가시나무와 같다. 미련한 사람이나 지나가는 사람을 고용하는 것은, 궁수가 닥치는 대로 사람을 쏘아대는 것과 같다. 개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹듯이, 미련한 사람은 어리석은 일을 되풀이한다. 너는 스스로 지혜롭다 하는 사람을 보았을 것이나, 그런 사람보다는 오히려 미련한 사람에게 더 희망이 있다.”

“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. Sending a message by the hands of a fool is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison. Like the useless legs of one who is lame is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. Like tying a stone in a sling is the giving of honor to a fool. Like a thornbush in a drunkard’s hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. Like an archer who wounds at random is one who hires a fool or any passer-by. As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly. Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.”
